Description

Half day Baladi intensive | Open to all levels BALADI MEANS COUNTRY IN EGYPT. IT CAN DESCRIBE A PERSON, HOMELAND, RHYTHM, DANCE, OR VARIOUS ASPECTS OF LIFE. As part of the Hanan Arts Shimmy Shift Pivot initiative, participants will engage in an intensive exploration of their bodies through the Baladi technique as well as critical dialogue around the issues and themes of the Shimmy Shift Pivot program including race, politics, and identity. The intensive will include discussion, reflection, and writing guided by prompts, improvisation, and interactive exercises. Movement is anchored in the Baladi technique, an Egyptian women’s folk and social dance which will be examined through an intersectional feminist framework. Shimmy Shift Pivot is a thought-provoking webinar and workshop series that engages leaders in the arts and academia to tackle divisive issues such as race, colonization, identity, and gender violence as they are experienced through the lens of dance. It is an interactive, safe space for uncensored honest dialogue that builds community through deeper understanding. Hosted at the MDC Koubek Center, 2705 SW 3rd Street, Miami FL 33135. Presented in partnership with MDC Live Arts Miami and Hanan Arts. This pioneering humanitarian cultural exchange started in 2002. These grassroots efforts resulted in the first international festival in 2016, the result of a return to a community that was built from a belly dance workshop in 2002. The festival hosted 90 women and girls for 3 days of dance workshops, lead by several leaders from the international belly dance community, as a way to empower cultural exchange. The Festival was held again from April 19-23, 2018, engaging 200 women with the best and brightest talents across continents, disciplines and genres. Hanan Arts was able to expand this program thanks to The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Knight Arts Challenge Grant, with matching funds from the Ware Foundation and sponsorships from the arts community. This is deep cultural work, conducted in a non-commercial format to offer an educational, cultural exchange and solidarity model. We are proud of the trailblazing work we have been doing on the ground since 2002! For updates on how to register and more, join our mailing list or follow us on Instagram.
