LOS ANGELES, CA — Los Angeles firefighters and a hazardous materials team are battling a fire at a metal scrap yard in Boyle Heights. The blaze involves titanium shavings, triggering the need for a hazmat response.
Crews are monitoring water runoff from the firefight for hazardous materials. The fire, which has sent smoke billowing into the air over East Los Angeles, broke out shortly before 3:20 p.m. Monday at the scrapyard at 1820 South Soto Street.
The outside titanium piles are not causing any structural threats and are being allowed to burn, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart.
No injuries have been reported, and the fire is not threatening to extend beyond the scrap yard., according to Stewart.
