Fremont's Candle Lighters Ghost House Cancels For Halloween 2021

FREMONT, CA — Candle Lighters, a Tri-City-based volunteer group launched in 1969, has opted to scrap Halloween 2021 plans for its annual Ghost House — an October tradition held at the Williams Historic Park's Chadbourne Carriage House in Fremont. The organization said COVID-19 restrictions left organizers with a time-frame too short to adequately plan for the extravaganza. The Ghost House, typically a multi-weekend, family-friendly combo of carnival games, legendary, hand-dipped caramel apples, a country store and entertainment, routinely drew crowds and raised funds for non-profit groups and community projects in Fremont, Newark and Union City. The event also was canceled in 2020, due to pandemic-related mandates. As for the 2021 decision, Candle Lighters said: "This incredibly difficult decision was made with careful consideration for the health and safety (of) our members, adult volunteers, student volunteers and guests, along with an understanding that our planning and organization time was cut significantly short due to COVID-19 restrictions." "There were still so many unanswered questions at the beginning of our crucial planning timeframe, that unfortunately there was ultimately just not enough time to get everything we need in place for 2021," the group said in its announcement. Candle Lighters said its focus is now on its 2022 return with a "Witches Through Time" theme.
