DETROIT—James White will be Detroit's next police chief, Mayor Mike Duggan said at a news conference Monday. The Detroit City Council still has to approve Duggan's choice before White is seated as the new head of the Detroit Police Department. The council will have 30 days to make a decision. White has been serving as the interim police chief for the past three months, following the departure of James Craig, who announced he will challenge Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in the governor's race. White also served as an assistant police chief in the department and executive director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights. "I want you to know candidly that I'm going to support these officers, but I'm going to require that there is excellence and a drive towards excellence in policing, and continuing to build these relationships in a transparent way so that you know what's happening with your police department and you build trust with this police department," White said during the news conference.
