PORT JEFFERSON, NY — A state of emergency has been declared and cars have been ordered off affected streets in the Village of Port Jefferson in response to Henri which is expected to touch down on Long Island as a hurricane. In an emergency order signed into effect on Saturday, Mayor Margot Garant said that it was executed "with the imminent threat of Tropical Storm Henri forecasted to bring severe weather and the National Weather Service placing our village under a hurricane warning with a threat to life and property that includes typical forecast uncertainty in its track, size, and intensity." Garant also asked that merchants consider not coming to the village to open their establishments on Sunday in a letter to businesses. "We are expecting high tide at noontime on Sunday and with coastal storm surges and heavy rains, we anticipate road closures for the lower downtown business district as well as the coastal flooding that occurs at the known intersections, parking lots, and downtown streets," she wrote. Garant went on to recommend that anyone is going to work to open or check on their establishments to park on high ground and use the Trader's Cove parking lot or the Meadow lot. The Town of Brookhaven lot may be closed because flooding is anticipated at the Danford's and Baker's Alley lots, according to Garant. The village's code and public works department staff will be working to keep the roads open and safe, Garant said. "Please take every precaution to protect your property and relocate or park your vehicle on higher ground," the letter concluded.
