FIRE ISLAND, NY — Fire Island National Seashore experienced minimal damage during Tropical Storm Henri and is reopening with limited visitor services Monday, but beach areas normally patrolled by lifeguards will be closed due to hazardous surf conditions.
Visitor centers and concession areas may have limited hours and services pending conditions, according to a news release. Ferry service to Watch Hill and Sailors Haven will be offered on a rainy day schedule, officials said, adding that visitors should follow the Davis Park, Sayville, and Fire Island ferry websites for schedules and up-to-date information about ferry services to Fire Island communities.
Park operations and visitor services will return to normal on Tuesday.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone placed the residential communities on the barrier island under a voluntary evacuation order as a safety precaution due to Tropical Storm Henri, which on Saturday was projected to become a Category 1 Hurricane set to make landfall in the region. Henri was downgraded to tropical storm status on Sunday, as it hit further east than expected.
