NEW YORK CITY – Central Park's massive Homecoming Concert that was intended to mark New York City's recovery from the coronavirus was halted Saturday as a thunderstorm hit the city. A crowd of thousands was told to leave the area.
The concert was stopped in the midst of a performance by Barry Manilow shortly after 7:30 p.m. amid drenching rain, thunder and lightning.
A message on the event's PA system told people to leave and find shelter. A tweet from the NYPD repeated the information.
#CentralPark Concert Advisory: Due to approaching severe weather, all those attending the event are to calmly move to the nearest exits and proceed to areas outside of the park. This is NOT an emergency. Please be guided by NYPD officers who are there to help. pic.twitter.com/21PWPvp4vZ— NYPD NEWS (@NYPDnews) August 21, 2021
