Western Springs Sees Most Virus Cases Since May: County

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Last week, Western Springs saw the most new coronavirus cases in a week since May, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. As of Sunday, the village had experienced 1,400 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, with 25 new cases in the last week. The week before last, the village saw 17 new cases. For four weeks in June and July, the village's coronavirus case count did not budge. The number of Western Springs' virus-related deaths stayed the same in the last week, at six. The latest deaths were reported May 31, May 11 and Nov. 21, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. That's a mortality rate of less than 1 percent. All the local deaths have been those who were 53 or older, according to the county medical examiner. The figure compares to 85 in Darien, 92.4 in La Grange Park, 96.1 in DuPage County, 97.3 in Hinsdale, 99.6 in Elmhurst, 106.4 in Clarendon Hills, 107.5 in suburban Cook County, 110.3 in Burr Ridge and 135.3 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands). As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,482,369, up 1.7 percent from a week earlier, according to the state Department of Public Health. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 23,717. Nationally, 37.6 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported, up 3.2 percent from the week before, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A total of 625,375 people have died from the virus in the United States.
