Description

Wildlife biologist Joe Figel will detail an exciting new opportunity to support wildlife conservation efforts in Colombia and Sumatra. Due primarily to climate and geography, Colombia and Indonesia are the second and third-most biodiverse countries on the planet. Among their hundreds of mammalian species and tens of thousands of plant species, roam two of the most iconic rainforest animals: Sumatran tigers and jaguars. Yet, for most people, the names Colombia and Sumatra (Indonesia) conjure images of supermarket coffee or, perhaps, conflict and catastrophic natural disasters. If anything environmental comes to mind, it is likely an image of deforestation or maybe a rehabilitated orangutan. The biodiversity of these countries–and the people who share their habitats–deserve better. I hope you’ll attend on September 22 to learn how this past year and a half has opened opportunities to make lemonade from lemons or – more aptly stated – conservation from coffee.  All proceeds raised from this lecture will be used to support wildlife conservation activities in Colombia and Sumatra.
