MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — Substantial transmission of the coronavirus has continued in Montgomery County since the indoor mask mandate was reinstated earlier this month. In the past 7 days — from Saturday, Aug. 14 to Friday, Aug. 20 — 842 cases of COVID-19 were reported, according to county data. Here are the case counts for each day over the past week: Saturday, Aug. 14 - 110Sunday, Aug. 15 - 116Monday, Aug. 16 - 81Tuesday, Aug. 17 - 118Wednesday, Aug. 18 - 110Thursday, Aug. 19 - 139Friday, Aug. 20 - 168Roughly 5 percent of intensive care beds in the county are currently occupied by people who have COVID-19, the county data reports. "The vast majority of hospitalizations and deaths are unvaccinated people," said County Executive Marc Elrich in a letter to the county on Thursday. "Out of the more than 1,500 people in Maryland who have died from COVID-19 since the end of January, 96 percent were unvaccinated and only four percent were vaccinated. And in our County, the 'break-through' cases (vaccinated people who get COVID) that required hospitalization were .004 percent of the vaccinated population." Montgomery County has high rates of vaccination compared to the rest of the country — nearly 65 percent of Montgomery County residents are fully vaccinated compared to about half of people nationwide. "Even with those impressive numbers, we must continue to be careful," said Elrich in the letter. "The number of COVID cases is still concerning, and we remain a community with 'Substantial Transmission' of the virus according to the CDC. This means the indoor mask mandate remains in effect in Montgomery County." View the county's COVID-19 and vaccination data here.
