Press release from the Dublin Chamber of Commerce: July 19, 2021 Veterans, active-duty service members and their families who attend Las Positas College can now meet, study, take classes together and offer support to one another, thanks to a brand new learning community established at the college to serve this population.   The Mission Ready: Veterans Learning Community is the newest group at the college, modeled after existing successful learning communities including Puente, Umoja, Gateway to Success and Engineering Technology.    Students who join the Mission Ready: Veterans Learning Community will take classes together, including English 1A and Speech 1, which are now open for Fall 2021 registration. These two classes are the core of the new Veterans Learning Community, coordinated by the Las Positas College (LPC) Veterans First Program. The class selection offered by Mission Ready satisfies commonly needed requirements for transferring to the California State University or University of California systems.   "By providing a cohesive grouping of classes and classmates Mission Ready is intended to increase the engagement and learning retention of student veterans," said Las Positas College Veterans First Supervisor, Todd Steffan. "Military-affiliated students who have not yet completed their transfer requirements would especially benefit from signing up for the Mission Ready learning community."   LPC also offers the Veterans First Program, the college's larger initiative to provide veterans and military-affiliated students with services and resources to help them achieve their educational goals. During the 2020-21 academic year, more than 500 veterans, active-duty military personnel, reservists/guard and veteran family members were enrolled at the college.  Veteran support services at LPC include a full-time support team, priority registration, Veteran scholarships, a textbook loan program, work-study program, relief fund for Veterans, an active Student Veterans Organization, a virtual Veterans Resource Center and many other services and programs for all those who served, currently serving and military family members.   Any military-affiliated student interested in learning more about Mission First or the Veterans First Program and other available resources can contact [email protected] or visit the Veterans Center online at laspositascollege.edu/veterans for more information. About Las Positas College   Las Positas College currently enrolls 9,300 students and offers curriculum for students seeking transfer to a four-year college or university, career preparation, or basic skills education.
