Description
Join the Share a Seed project and Slow Food DC for an interactive garden planning and cover crop event at Upshur Community Garden! Summer may be winding down, but it's not the end of planting season! Fall planting is absolutely a thing, and so is prepping your garden over the winter for an even more bountiful spring! Please join us on Saturday, September 11 for a day in the garden with Dr. Andy Clark of the USDA's Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program and Wes King of the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition. Andy and Wes will provide us with a detailed lesson on what to plant this fall and how to show some love to your soil by cover cropping (planting beneficial crops specifically to prevent erosion and feed the soil) over the winter. All attendees will be given their own free bag of cover crop seed to plant while supplies last! (Priority will be given to those who RSVP) The Share a Seed project will also be on site distributing free fall seeds and garden equipment and librarians from Mt. Pleasant Library will be hosting a garden-themed storytime session for young visitors. Donations are optional, but encouraged. They can be made when you RSVP for the event or in-person at the event (cash or Venmo options). All proceeds support the continued work of Share a Seed project and Slow Food DC. In addition to the fall garden and cover crop workshop, visitors are welcome to explore and enjoy the garden. You can also learn more about the gardens beehives and chat with the folks from DC Beekeepers! ---- Please stay home if you are feeling unwell! The Slow Food DC (SFDC) chapter is a community that promotes and celebrates local, seasonal, and sustainable food sources; works to preserve the culinary traditions of the region’s ethnically and culturally diverse populations; and supports the right of all people to enjoy good, clean, fair food. SFDC represents the national capitol area, including Washington, DC, Virginia and Maryland. Members come from a wide variety of professions and backgrounds. We organize dinners, tastings, tours, lectures, and community outreach events providing SFDC members an opportunity to explore the richness of our region’s culinary heritage in addition to the diverse array of food and drink from around the world represented in our foodshed. It is our goal to connect our eaters with the biodiverse and sustainable food producers, as well as increase public awareness of slow eating.
