Join the CRC for our annual COASTSWEEP Cleanup. We will be working to catalog and remove litter from Riverbend Park, Cambridge. Join the Conservancy on Saturday, September 18 from 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. ,in our Riverbend Park, Cambridge location for our annual COASTSWEEP Cleanup. We will be working to remove and catalog litter from the park and banks of the river. Background For the past 7+ year the Conservancy has participated in the COASTSWEEP initiative. From late August into November, thousands of people in Massachusetts volunteer for COASTSWEEP—the statewide beach and waterway cleanup sponsored by the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM). COASTSWEEP is part of the International Coastal Cleanup organized by Ocean Conservancy in Washington, DC. Volunteers from all over the world collect marine debris—trash, fishing line, and any other human-made items—and categorize and tally what they find. This information is then used to help discover marine /river debris sources and find solutions to this problem. Event Location/Meeting Spot: We will be working in and around Riverbend Park, Cambridge. This is large area, which will make for easy social distancing! You can enter 971 Memorial Drive, Cambridge, MA 02138 in your GPS. Look for the white and black Conservancy truck, parked near the Weld Boat House. Before we begin working, volunteers will be given a lesson on the history of the river and given directions and supplies for the cleanup. What to Bring/ Wear: The Charles River Conservancy will provide all materials, including gloves, hand sanitizer, and antibacterial wipes, needed for the cleanup. If you prefer to bring and use your own tools from home, it might be a good idea to bring: Work GlovesTrash PickNet (for removing litter from river)Wear light colored clothing (for tick prevention)Long sleeves shirt and pantsClosed toed shoesEvent Safety Protocols: While Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted by the MA Department of Conservation and Recreation, for the health and safety of all our volunteers and park users the Charles River Conservancy still recommends that: • All volunteers wear a facemask. • All equipment, tools, and materials be disinfected before and after use in accordance with CDC guidelines. Furthermore, participants should not share equipment, tools, or other materials. • Participants use alcohol-based sanitizer, which will be available for all. • Participants adhere to social distancing guidelines and remain at least six feet away from others. • Food and drinks be brought from participants’ homes and not shared with individuals outside of one’s household. The Charles River Conservancy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Cambridge, MA. Established in 2000, the CRC is dedicated to the stewardship, renewal, and enhancement of the urban parklands along the Charles River. The CRC works in partnership with the Department of Conservation and Recreation to make the parklands more active, attractive, and accessible for all. A major initiaitve of the CRC is the Swim Park Project, which seeks to reclaim urban swimming in the urban Charles River by building a safe, fun, and accessible permanent swimming facility in the river.
