SHARON, MA — Volunteer turned longtime employee of Pine Street Inn, New England's largest homeless service provider, says goodbye to his coworkers and friends after 45 years of dedicated service to the homeless community in Boston. Hughs is retiring as Senior Project Manager and as the organization's longest-tenured employee. Though Hughes started as a volunteer, he quickly demonstrated leadership skills and moved to a variety of professional roles, including Director of Housing, Director of Property Management, interim Executive Director to now Senior Project Manager. "It's just remarkable to sit down and talk with the guests and tenants and hear the stories of what they have gone through, the challenges that they may have experienced in their lives, how they came to be homeless, and what it means to them to be in a home," Hughes said in a statement reflecting on his career. Hughes has been crucial to the success of Pine Street Inn, moving people off the street, out of shelters, and into the safety and stability of a permanent home.
