UPDATE: Brigitte Lituma, 25, of Bellport, has been identified as the driver of the Nissan, who was seriously injured in a motor vehicle crash on Sunrise Highway on Thursday, Suffolk police said. BELLPORT, NY — A woman was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital Medical Center with serious injuries after she was hit while standing outside of her car following a crash on Sunrise Highway in Bellport late Thursday night, Suffolk County police said. Police said the woman, whose identity has not been released, was driving a Nissan Maxima that merged onto westbound Sunrise Highway from the Horseblock Road ramp and it collided with a westbound 2017 Ford F-150, "causing the Nissan to spin around and come to a stop facing east in the westbound lane." The Ford then struck a guardrail "before coming to a stop several hundred feet away," police said. Emily Sperling, who was driving a 2020 Toyota Tundra westbound, stopped the car on the grass on the south side of the roadway to help and call 911 to report the crash, according to police. The woman who had been driving the Nissan "was apparently standing outside of the vehicle," police said, adding that a westbound 2012 Kia Optima collided with the car, "causing the Nissan to crash into the Toyota," at about 9:20 p.m. The driver of the Nissan, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was airlifted to Stony Brook "in critical condition," while the Ford's driver, Andres Guapacha, 41, of Coram, was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue for treatment of "minor injuries," police said. The driver of the Kia, Ronald Jewell, 75, of Patchogue, was transported to Long Island Community Hospital for treatment of "minor injuries," according to police. Sperling, 17, of Bay Shore, and a passenger of the Toyota were not injured, police said. The three vehicles involved in the second crash were impounded for standard safety checks, according to police. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to call the 5fth Squad at 631-854-8552.
