NEWTON, MA — The Newton Board of License Commissioners agreed to consider a ban on nip bottles after hearing a request from Councilor Emily Norton at Tuesday's meeting. Norton, along with Councilors-At-Large Andrea Kelly and Alison Leary, initially proposed the ban at theJune 21 City Council meeting, requesting a discussion on "the prohibition of the sale of miniature, single-use containers for alcoholic beverages in containers less than or equal to 100 milliliters." Board members Kathleen McCarthy and Anil Adyanthaya voted to hold an additional meeting about the proposal and a public hearing once the details are finalized. The date of the next meeting has not yet been set. Norton said Newton liquor stores will be notified of all meetings related to the proposal. If the city succeeds in banning nips, it will join several other Massachusetts communities including Chelsea and Mashpee, that have already banned the single-use bottles.
