NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Iona's Darrell Wheeler, the school's provost and senior vice president, has been sworn in as a councilmember of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS. The Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA) offers recommendations to the Secretary of Health and Human Services on policies related to the prevention, treatment and cure of HIV and AIDS. The council also offers recommendations to the secretary regarding the development and implementation of the "Ending the HIV Epidemic in the U.S" initiative and the HIV National Strategic Plan, with both programs having the stated goal of ending the HIV epidemic in the U.S. by 2030. Iona College Provost Darrell P. Wheeler joins the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (Iona College) "Through my new position, I remain dedicated to promoting continued movement to end the AIDS epidemic and to promoting engagement of underrepresented minorities in HIV prevention sciences, care and treatment on an even larger scale," Wheeler said in a statement announcing his appointment to the council. Wheeler was among eight experts sworn in by HHS Assistant Secretary for Health Rachel Levine on Wednesday. Wheeler currently serves on the Executive Management Committee of the HIV Prevention Trials Network. He also co-chairs the HIV Prevention Trial Networks HPTN Scholars Program. Having led significant HIV prevention and intervention studies, Wheeler was personally selected for the by the seat by HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra.
