POINT PLEASANT BEACH, NJ – Point Pleasant Beach will be the temporary home of a piece of New Jersey's boating history as the state's official tall ship, the A.J. Meerwald, will dock in town from Aug. 26 to Sept. 7 before heading up to Maine for repairs. The A.J. Meerwald is an oyster dredging schooner from 1928 and is one of hundreds of schooners built along South Jersey's Bayshore before the decline of the shipbuilding industry, which coincided with the Great Depression and is the National Register of Historic. Today, the AJ Meerwald is used by the Bayshore Center at Bivalve as a traveling classroom and vehicle to enjoy local waterways. There will be a sendoff party for the A.J. Meerwald on Sept. 4 from 7-9 pm at 301 Channel Drive in Point Pleasant Beach, with a reception that includes hors d' oeuvres, raw oysters, beer, wine, and music from James Dalton. All proceeds will go towards the ship's restoration and the Point Pleasant Beach Community Endowment Fund. Tickets for the send-off event are $75 and can be purchased online.
