In the wake of the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Haiti on Saturday, August 14, and the subsequent aftershocks and Tropical Storm Grace, New Life for Haiti is raising funds for disaster relief efforts. New Life for Haiti Raises Funds for Earthquake and Tropical Storm Relief Plainfield, Illinois, August 20, 2021: In the morning hours of Saturday, August 14, Haiti experienced a 7.2 magnitude earthquake, with the earthquake’s epicenter not that far from New Life for Haiti’s headquarters in Marfranc. The death toll has climbed to 2,000 and is expected to reach between 10,000-100,00. New Life for Haiti’s team have identified over 176 destroyed homes and 145 severely damaged homes in one community alone. With Tropical Storm Grace bringing 15 inches of rain just a few days after the earthquake, landslides and road blockages brought more injuries and fatalities. Since last Saturday, New Life for Haiti’s local Haitian staff have been hard at work acquiring critical supplies and distributing life-saving aid. The team’s Haitian Field Director, Vilex Plaisir, spent Thursday, August 19, distributing food, water, and tarps to nearby communities. “So many people are really happy, some people say they were [were] waiting for us because [they] think New Life for Haiti [is] never absent in these moment[s], that make[s] me happy”, reports Vilex. In the coming weeks and months, New Life for Haiti will focus on providing life-saving nutrition, temporary shelters, and clean water while assessing the damage to determine the best ways to help the community recover.
