Happy National Senior Citizens Day, Today there's news for residents fed up with speeding near their homes, as well as a FDA-approved COVID-19 treatment gaining popularity, and a look at how remote learning affected younger students in North Carolina. Here are the top stories today in Raleigh: The City of Raleigh is considering reducing more neighborhood speed limits this year than they have in the past four years combined. Raleigh's Neighborhood Traffic Management Program has already reduced the speed limit for 65 neighborhood streets. In addition to those reductions, 46 additional streets are currently being petitioned or considered by the City for speed reduction. If you believe your street should get a speed limit reduction, you can apply to have it considered online. (CBS17)In Wake County, you may notice a delayed 9-1-1 response if your call is not of an emergency, life-threatening nature. First responders fielded more than 10,000 calls each month in May, June, and July and are outpacing it for August. Chief Brooks of Wake County EMS says calls for mental health and overdose are up across the boards. Brooks also expressed that if the call is a non-emergency, be patient. Help will be there at some point in time, but workers must prioritize ambulance dispatch to life-threatening emergencies. (abc11)The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has seen a dramatic increase in the use of antibody treatments for COVID-19 since last June. With Monoclonal antibody treatment, the FDA reported an 80% reduction in symptomatic infection as well as reduced likeliness of hospitalization. The State Health Department expressed that Monoclonal antibody therapy is not a substitute for vaccinations, but with the rising hospitalizations it is becoming an important tool. The week of June 23 there were 100 treatments administered, and the figure jumped to 1,874 for the week of August 11. (CBS17, more info: CBS17)One person died in a Thursday night crash in Raleigh. Officers responded to an injury wreck call at 11:12 pm on Glenwood Avenue near Ebenezer Church Road. The vehicle involved was heading north on Glenwood when the driver crashed into the back of a semi-truck. The driver was killed in the crash, and authorities have not released the identity of the driver. (CBS17)A study estimating how far behind NC elementary and middle school students fell during the pandemic year, shows that North Carolina has seen a greater setback than the national average. The study compared test results of students to where they would be expected to be after a normal academic year in literacy and mathematics. The study saw moderate impacts in reading and significantly more impacts in math. Younger students saw greater deviation from the expected progress, however the report points out that younger students also tend to pick things up quicker than students in more advanced grades.
