MICHIGAN—Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is asking DTE and other consumer utilities to expand credits offered to customers who have suffered power outages over the past few weeks, according to The Detroit News.
"More than 750,000 Michiganders lost power over the last few weeks, with some outages lasting up to a week on some of the hottest days of the year," Whitmer said in a letter addressed to DTE, Consumers Energy and Indiana and Michigan Power. "Outages like these lead to fridges full of spoiled food, interfere with life-saving medical equipment, disrupt the workday and exacerbate the dangers of unmitigated hot weather."
Not only did Gov. Whitmer say the companies should offer higher credits, but that those customers should automatically be enrolled in to a system to receive them, according to the news report. Attorney General Dana Nessel also issued a similar request earlier this week.
DTE has recently added a $100 credit for anyone who remained without power until Monday. That credit is added to the previous $25.
"Our teams are working to apply the credits on the accounts of all customers who qualify, and we will be notifying these customers over the next several days," DTE said in an email to The Detroit News.
More than 850,000 customers were left without power after last week's storms.
