Description

Forging Opportunities for Refugees in America ("FORA") is currently accepting applications for our fall tutoring session! Founded in 2018 in response to the Rohingya refugee crisis, FORA's mission is to ensure that refugee families in Chicago are provided access to an education sufficient to prepare them to become economically self-sufficient and robustly engaged in American civic life. Our approach is to provide over 2600 hours each month of one-on-one, individually customized high dosage tutoring to refugee children in grades K-12, as well as other empowerment services. As a result of the systemic denial of education by oppressors around the world, many refugees arrive in the United States having never been to school and unable to read or write in their own languages. The acronym used to describe this population is SLIFE (Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education) refugee students, and we at FORA are laser-focused on ensuring that these children have a fair shot at succeeding when they arrive in the United States. COMMITMENT: The available in-person tutoring time slots are 4:30-5:30pm, 5:30-6:30pm, 7-8pm, 8-9pm (all are in Central time zone). You can select which to apply for based on your availability. Volunteers must commit to tutoring at least 100 hours over 1 year so that we can maintain consistency and provide high quality tutoring for our students. REQUIREMENTS: live in and are a legal resident of the United States, speak English, are willing to undergo a background check, and are patient and kind. AGE REQUIREMENTS: We are recruiting tutors in high school and above. To learn more and apply, visit https://www.refugeefora.org/volunteertutorapplication
