Islip Town Gave $1.6M To Help Renters Affected By Pandemic

ISLIP, NY—The Town of Islip has been allocating funds to renters who need emergency assistance because of the COVID-19 pandemic and more is available. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently met with the Town of Islip Community Development Agency Executive Director James Bowers and Julia MacGibbon, the CDA Assistant Director, to explain how residents and business owners can access the fund. The Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) gives financial assistance for low to moderate income households that have been affected by the pandemic. The Town of Islip has disbursed $1.6 million so far from the fund, which comes from the U.S Department of Treasury. "The Town of Islip CDA has made people feel comfortable asking for help," Supervisor Carpenter said. "Residents are experiencing trying times through no fault of their own, and we are grateful we're able to help keep them in their homes." To qualify, a tenant or landlord needs to live in or own a unit in the township, have a lease, be able to show loss of income due to COVID-19 and be at or under 80 percent of Suffolk's median income.
