Driver Shortage Could Prompt School Bus Delays In Fairfax County

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Fairfax County Public Schools, along with other school districts around the U.S., is experiencing a bus driver shortage. That could lead to delays on the first day of school. The school district said families should expect bus delays starting on the first day of school, Monday. Families are encouraged to walk or drive their children when possible or send them with a neighbor. Transportation information should be updated through each student's school. "We are continuing efforts to recruit and hire drivers," FCPS stated. "In the interim, please accept our apology for the inconvenience." Due to the driver shortage, FCPS will increase "double back" bus runs, or buses with two scheduled routes that would usually be covered by two buses. That could impact scheduled times at bus stops and school drop-offs, as well as potentially after-school drop-offs. Families can stay informed about potential delays through the Here Comes the Bus app or FCPS School Bus Delays website. Applicants interested in bus driver positions can visit the FCPS website. The school district is offering a $2,000 signing bonus to new drivers.
