NEW LONDON, CT — New London and Groton are joining other towns across the state in issuing an indoor mask mandate due to rising concern around the spread of the COVID-19 delta variant, The New London Day reported. New London Mayor Michael Passero, Groton Town Manager John Burt, and City of Groton Mayor Keith Hedrick issued an emergency declaration requiring face coverings be worn in all indoor public spaces regardless of vaccination status beginning Monday. Masks are already required in many local government buildings and will now be required in other spaces including retail stores, restaurants, supermarkets, and entertainment venues, according to The New London Day. Passero said the move follows the advice of the Ledge Light Health District and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Gov. Ned Lamont recently announced that students and school staff would be required to continue wearing masks inside school buildings. In a Wednesday press conference, Lamont also reaffirmed that any mandate for vaccinated residents to wear masks inside restaurants and other local businesses would remain the decision of town and city governments.
