MARINA DEL REY, CA — The last 10 years have marked a dramatic shift in the demographic makeup of the U.S., with a marked shrinkage of the white population and the rapid growth of the Hispanic/Latino community.
These changes were not reflected in Marina del Rey, where the share of the white population grew by 22.27 percent while the Hispanic population grew by 63.41 percent. The Asian population and the Black/African American population grew by 14.27 percent and 11.04 percent, respectively.
Marina del Rey also showed an increase in the number of people who identified themselves as multiracial, although the reasons are complex. Experts say the increase reflects changes in the way people identify themselves as well the number of children born to parents of mixed races or ethnicities, along with changes in the wording of census forms themselves.
In Marina del Rey, the number of people who identified themselves as being two or more races was 637, showing a growth of 101.58 percent.
