EAST VILLAGE, NY — A popular Lower Manhattan vegan and vegetarian restaurant is moving into the longtime home of the now-shuttered Odessa Diner in the East Village, according to Grub Street. Superiority Burger, which is currently located at 430 East 9th Street, will be moving into the former home of Odessa at 119 Avenue A. It's not clear when exactly this move will take place. Odessa closed in the summer of 2020 after 40 years of serving customers in the East Village. Odessa was a beloved neighborhood restaurant as one of the few 24-hour diners still in business, and one of the few eateries that still offered traditional Eastern European and Ukrainian diner food. At the time of closure, the restaurant's manager Dennis Vassilatos attributed the reasoning to the "significant loss of business during the COVID-19 crisis," and not about any hike in rent from the landlord, according to EV Grieve. Odessa then made headlines after its closure by having its 100-seat diner appear on Craigslist for $400,000. It is not clear if this is the amount of money Superiority Burger paid to take over the space.
