DETROIT—The Michigan Department of Health and Human services hopes local school districts will enforce a mask mandate for all students, visitors and staff, regardless of their vaccination status. Since there is no statewide mask mandate, school districts will have to decide for themselves whether or not to enforce face coverings. Most schools in the Metro Detroit region will resume in-person learning with classes beginning the first week of September. Here's what we know so far about mask requirements in Detroit-area school districts: Clinton Township School District The Chippewa Schools district will not be requiring masks this fall. The district added it regularly confers with the professionals at the Macomb County Health Department (MCHD) on COVID-related issues and monitor data sources that inform of the prevalence of COVID-19 in the school community. Schools will open on Sep. 7. Detroit Public Schools Community District The district will require face masks to be worn in all school buildings by students, visitors and staff. Additionally, each school will provide reusable masks for all students and staff. Each classroom will be capped at no more than 20 individual students per room. Schools will open Sep. 7. Dearborn Public Schools Dearborn Public schools will not be enforcing any kind of a mask mandate. But the district and health department continue to monitor local conditions and have regular conversations with the Wayne County Health Department. Schools will open Aug. 30. Ferndale Public Schools Ferndale Schools will require all students and staff to wear a mask while they are inside school buildings. Schools will open Aug. 30. Grosse Pointe Public Schools Grosse Pointe Public Schools has no mask mandate at this time. Schools will open Sep. 7. Novi Community School District Novi schools are strongly recommending face coverings for all staff and students, but will not be requiring them. Additionally, the district does not anticipate daily screening for the start of the school year or testing. Schools will open on Sep.7. Plymouth-Canton Public Schools Plymouth-Canton Public Schools has no mask mandate at this time. Schools will open Sep. 7. Rochester Public Schools Rochester Public Schools have no mask mandate at this time. Schools will open Aug. 31. Royal Oak Public Schools There will be no remote learning for K-8 and all students and staff in school buildings will be required to wear face masks. Schools will open Sep. 8. Saint Clair Shores Schools Lake Shore Public Schools will not be not requiring mask mandates, but reiterates it is extremely important that parents/guardians monitor their children closely and complete at-home screening each day, including a temperature check, prior to sending their child to school. Schools will open on Sep. 7. Troy Public Schools Troy Public Schools will not be requiring masks in school buildings at this time. Schools will open Sep. 1.
