Fulton Elections Chair Resigns To Run For Atlanta City Council

ATLANTA, GA — The chair of the Fulton County elections board resigned from his post after just five months Thursday morning, and plans to qualify for candidacy on the Atlanta City Council. Alex Wan, the Fulton elections board chair, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution he resigned early Thursday morning. He said he plans to qualify Thursday afternoon for the District 6 seat on ACC, which was left open when the current council member, Jennifer Ide, announced she wasn't running for reelection Monday. District 6 — a seat which Wan previously held for eight years— encompasses most of Intown and Northeast Atlanta, including Midtown, Virginia Highlands and Morningside. Two other candidates have qualified to run for the seat: Justin Critz and Courtney Jenee DeDi. According to The AJC, Wan is a gay man, an entrepreneur and was the first Asian American politician to win a city council seat in 2009. He stepped down in 2017 to run for Atlanta City Council president, but lost to Felicia Moore. Fulton County Commissioners Chair Rob Pitts appointed Wan as the chair of Fulton's elections board in March after former chair Mary Carole Cooney resigned due to a prolonged illness, The AJC reported.
