About Agri Service: Agri Service, owner and operator of the El Corazon Compost Facility, is headquartered in Oceanside. Recognizing that traditional methods of green waste disposal such as open burning or landfilling are both inefficient and environmentally unsound, the City of Oceanside partnered with Agri Service, Inc. in 1995 to develop an innovative public-private recycling program. This novel program set out to put incoming organic material to good use at fees well below those of landfills. To date, the El Corazon Compost Facility has diverted over 1 million tons of green waste from area landfills and processes 100% of Oceanside’s residential curbside green waste right here in Oceanside. In April 2013 the El Corazon Compost Facility relocated to a new area on El Corazon and features a state-of-the-art forced aeration system. The new technology reduces odor caused by anaerobic microbial activity and reduces the time needed to produce compost. The process associated with forced aeration requires less land usage, a shorter thermophilic phase, and less heavy machinery usage. The reduction of time and resources reduces the overall costs and carbon footprint of manufacturing compost and mulch. In addition to the City’s economical and environmental benefits, Oceanside residents have the opportunity to pick up free compost generated from the City’s curbside green waste program. The Compost Give Away Program was approved in April 1997 and provides free, self-loaded compost to residents. Residents have access to products that enhance local soils, save water, and reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers. The program is the first of its kind in California and adds to the environmental awareness of the area and its citizens. Agri Service is a proud supporter of a Zero Waste Oceanside and will continue to help the City and its residents meet their Zero Waste goals.
