RENTON, WA — King County Elections certified its August primary results on Tuesday, officially closing the books two weeks after Election Day. On the countywide level, voter turnout landed just shy of 35 percent, coming in below projections, but some communities broke the 40 percent threshold. Just over 8,000 ballots were rejected, mostly due to arriving too late. Among the 485,241 ballots tallied across King County, more than half were returned by drop box. These were the five most popular drop boxes: Ballard Branch Library (Seattle): 12,963 ballotsRedmond City Hall: 7,926 ballotsBroadview Library (Seattle): 7,711 ballotsKing County Elections (Renton): 7,515 ballotsSeattle Central College: 7,489 ballots The top two candidates advance to general election ballots in November, including several major races across King County. Incumbent King County Executive Dow Constantine crossed the 50 percent mark during the primary and will face state Sen. Joe Nguyen, who picked up more than 32 percent of the primary vote. Among the three King County Council districts up for election this year, incumbents Pete von Reichbauer and Reagan Dunn both secured more than half of the primary votes, while Kathy Lambert garnered just over 40 percent of the vote. Lambert will face Sarah Perry in the general election, who received 36 percent of the primary vote. In Seattle, voters narrowed down a crowded field for mayor, and the race is shaping up to be a tight one in November. Former Seattle City Council President Bruce Harrell secured the top spot in the primary, with 34 percent of the vote, and will face sitting Council President M. Lorena González, who trailed by less than two points. In another closely watched race, Seattle will also elect a new city attorney after incumbent Pete Holmes failed to advance. Nicole Thomas-Kennedy, an abolitionist and former public defender, finished first with more than 36 percent of the vote. She will face Ann Davison, an attorney who most recently ran lieutenant governor as a Republican. Ballots for the Nov. 2 general election will be mailed on Oct. 13. Review a complete list of the final August primary results on the King County Elections website. Just over 8,200 ballots were rejected in this election, most for being returned too late. Vote early in the General. Don't let your ballot get rejected because you put it in the mail late or didn't make it to a drop box in time. 2/— King County Elections (@kcelections) August 18, 2021
