YONKERS, NY — A Yonkers man is in custody follow a headline-grabbing, bloody hatchet attack on a 51-year-old victim at an ATM in lower Manhattan on Sunday. The suspect is reportedly well-known to police in Yonkers. Aaron Garcia was arrested by NYPD on Tuesday night after he went on yet another frenzied rampage, police said. In this case, cops said a hammer was Garcia's weapon of choice when he was caught battering cars and businesses in Chelsea. It was only after Garcia was in custody, that he was tied to the earlier violent attack at the Chase Bank in the Financial District. A man using an ATM at the bank said he felt a sudden pain in the back of his leg, before then turning around to see Garcia armed with a hatchet, according to a report from amNY's Robert Pozarycki. Garcia then repeatedly hacked at the victim's head. The victim remains hospitalized with serious injuries. Police recovered a bloodied hatchet at the scene. CBS News reports that Garcia threatened a man with a hammer on Tuesday after the man bumped into him on the street, but he did not strike the man with the hammer. Garcia is already wanted in Yonkers on an active arrest warrant and four bench warrants, Yonkers Police told New York City CBS-affiliate WCBS. He is being held, pending psychiatric evaluation.
