Description

LEESBURG, VA — The last 10 years have marked a dramatic shift in the demographic makeup of the United States, with a marked shrinkage of the white population and the rapid growth of the Hispanic/Latino community. These changes were reflected on a local level through the Town of Leesburg's census data. The town's total population grew slightly from 2010 to 2020; the town now hosts 48,250 residents. The Town of Leesburg saw a slight decrease in the number of white residents. According to the 2020 census, the number of white people in the town shrunk by 0.35 percent to 26,735. However, the town as a whole grew more diverse, spurred by an increase in the number of Hispanic or Latino residents. The Hispanic population in Leesburg grew by 43.37 percent to 10,654. Hispanic residents represent 22 percent of the town's residents. The Hispanic boom accounted for almost half of the overall U.S. population growth, which was the slowest since the Great Depression. By comparison, the non-Hispanic growth rate over the decade was 4.3 percent. The Hispanic share of the U.S. population grew to 18.7 percent of the U.S. population, up from 16.3 percent in 2010. The share of the white population fell from 63.7 percent in 2010 to 57.8 percent in 2020, the lowest on record, driven by falling birthrates among white women compared with Hispanic and Asian women. The number of non-Hispanic white people shrank from 196 million in 2010 to 191 million. Leesburg also saw an increase in the number of Asian residents. In total, the town's Asian population grew by 42.19 percent to 4,240. The number of Black residents in the town also grew, but not as dramatically as the number of Asian and Hispanic residents. Leesburg's Black population grew by .82 percent to 3,953 people. Full information about the Town of Leesburg's census data is available online.
