FARMINGDALE, NY —Some families got an unwelcome surprise after visiting Farmingdale Public Library on Saturday. A pornographic comic book was accidentally added to a giveaway bag of comics distributed as part of a nationwide event called "Free Comic Book Day." A father who didn't want to be named told ABC 7 Eyewitness News that his son and another boy he knew viewed the images and he was "upset." It's unclear how the mix-up happened but the comic called "Fungirl: Tales of a Grown-Up Nothing," by Elizabeth Pich has cover art of a teenage girl skateboarding. The parent informed the library, which removed the comic along with two other comics with explicit language. Library director Debbie Podolski told Eyewitness News that the library will no longer participate in Free Comic Book Day. On FreeComicBookDay.com the title is listed as "MR," rated for mature audiences and the blurb includes a sexual reference. Coca-Cola sponsored Free Comic Book Day and suspended printing its advertisements in the Fungirl comic after realizing it was not family-friendly.
