AUSTIN, TX — Austin police plans to crack down on those who drink and drive ahead of Labor Day weekend next month, officials said. The department will be conducting a nightly Labor Day DWI Enforcement Initiative starting Friday through Monday, Sept. 6 in an effort to reduce the number of crashes, injuries, and fatalities due to intoxicated drivers. Officials said this initiative is an effort to enforce DWI laws, and to keep the public safe by encouraging drivers to make responsible decisions. "The Austin Police Department would like for everyone to safely enjoy the Labor Day holiday and a safe back to school season for those that are doing so," authorities said. "The Austin Police Department is focused on saving lives on the streets and highways of Austin and making Austin roadways safe for everyone through education and enforcement." This enforcement period is provided through an Impaired Driving Mobilization grant from TxDOT, officials said.
