NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — After it was suspended last year due to coronavirus, the Central Jersey Jazz Festival will return with live performances this September. The Festival will be September 10 in Flemington, September 11 in New Brunswick and Metuchen, and September 12 in Somerville. Last year, due to the impact of COVID-19 and for the first time in its 12-year history, the Central Jersey Jazz Festival pivoted from its traditional live performances and went completely virtual. The Jazz Festival began in 2009 in Somerville and evolved to become the tri-county, weekend-long festival it is known as today. "After such a trying year for artists everywhere, we're elated to be able to come together to support our line-up of musicians and enjoy the sounds that have become a staple of Fall," said Natalie Pineiro, executive director of the Downtown Somerville Alliance. The Central Jersey Jazz Festival is a free event, open to the public. Participants are encouraged to bring their chairs or blankets and arrive early to secure the best possible seating. 2021 schedule of performances: Flemington: Friday, September 10, 7:00 pm to 10:00 p.m. Davell Crawford, "The Prince of New Orleans" Charles Turner Quartet New Brunswick: Saturday, September 11, 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Emily Braden Quartet Mark Whitfield Quartet Terrell Stafford Quintet Metuchen: Saturday, September 11, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Marcus Printup Quintet Featuring Riza Printup Metuchen High School Jazz Ensemble Family Jazz Ed with Riza and Printup Band Somerset County Somerville: Sunday, September 12, 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. NJPAC Jazz for Teens, alumni trio Dara Tucker Orrin Evans Quartet Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital is the title sponsor of the Festival. In addition to the musical performances, patrons of the Festival have a chance to enjoy the unique ambiance of each town and take in the world-class dining, shopping, and festival add-ons in each community. "We've waited with great anticipation for this event to return to Flemington," said Robin Lapidus, the Flemington Community Partnership executive director. "Our 2019 event was fantastic and even more fun with the addition of affordable reserved table seating, delicious dinner vendors, and a beer and cocktail garden. Our Jazz Stage is a highlight of a weekend Arts Festival in Flemington, and we are thrilled with the caliber of talent performing on our outdoor stage this year." To take precautions against the spread of the COVID-19 virus, masking is encouraged where social distancing cannot be achieved.
