Description

Press release from Johnson City Public Library: Hannah Kiger August 18, 2021 Beginning on Wednesday, September 1, your Library is offering a series of "adulting" classes for teens. These sessions introduce teens to practical topics they probably haven't had to deal with yet, such as managing finances and building resumes. They also cover a range of life skills that will serve teens for the rest of their lives, like learning how to create healthy relationships, cope with stress, and manage time. These sessions are a partnership between your Library and A Step Ahead Tri-Cities, and will be led by local professionals in the fields of mental health, accounting, medicine, and more. The first class, Surviving College, will be led by current and recent college students. Teen Services Manager Amy Taylor sees these classes as vital to teen development. "Adulting classes are important to teens because they often cover topics that are no longer covered in school, or that can be unfamiliar to parents," Amy says. "For example, applying for college and financial aid is very fluid and changes often." These kinds of classes also create a neutral environment where kids can ask questions they may be embarrassed to bring up with family or friends. Amy explains, "Sensitive topics such as adolescent health and mindfulness can be things that teens are often uncomfortable speaking about and are afraid to ask questions about. By providing a safe space with professionals in their fields, it helps open a dialogue and provide answers."
