1 Person, 3 Pets Exposed To Rabid Fox In South Charlotte: Alert

CHARLOTTE, NC — Mecklenburg County Health Department issued a rabies alert notification in south Charlotte Wednesday evening after a fox tested positive for rabies. One person and three domesticated animals were exposed to the rabid fox, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Animal Care & Control unit. The exposure marks the second fox and ninth animal to test positive for rabies in the county so far this year. The alert for the neighborhood including Seneca Place neighborhood in the 28210 zip code was to be issued Aug. 18 at 7 p.m., AC&C said in a statement. Here's a list of where the nine animals that have tested positive for rabies in Mecklenburg County so far in 2021 were located: 7 raccoons (28226, 28227, 28105, 28207, 28210 and 28209 zip codes) 2 fox (28215, 28210 zip code) AC&C said the rabies incident underscores the importance of keeping pet vaccinations up to date. AC&C offers a free monthly rabies vaccination clinic for Mecklenburg County residents, on the second Saturday of every month. The clinic operations from 8 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the animal shelter at 8315 Byrum Drive in Charlotte. The clinic also offers microchipping for $10 and free pet identification tags.
