MARIETTA, GA — A man who allegedly drove off during a traffic stop in a stolen car is dead after a Cobb County officer shot and killed him Wednesday afternoon in Marietta, authorities said. Shortly before 4 p.m., Marietta Police Department officers spotted a stolen car and attempted to pull the driver over, MPD spokesperson Officer Chuck McPhilamy said. The suspect continued to drive away and hit several police cars in the process. Cobb County Sheriff's Office deputies — who were in the area for training — joined in the police chase, which ended outside an automotive shop near the intersection of Powder Springs Street and Sandtown Road. "At some point after the vehicle was stopped, a Cobb County Police Department officer fired his handgun, striking the suspect," McPhilamy said. "We can confirm the suspect died from his wounds." Traffic was shut down in both directions for hours, and drivers were urged to take Atlanta Road or South Cobb Drive to get around the delays, which made it difficult for school buses to take children home, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Marietta City Schools diverted some buses to Park Street Elementary School, holding students there until they could be picked up by their parents, the district said on Twitter. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in by Cobb County police and will take over the investigation, McPhilamy said. A portion of Powder Springs Street remained closed as of 6 p.m. Wednesday, according to The Marietta Daily Journal.
