It started as a small passion project with only a few participants but soon grew to around 50+ people per week. They quickly realized that there are countless people wanting to try longboarding that is often too intimidated by their fears to give it a try. Fear of failure. Fear of not being good enough. Fear of feeling out of place. By offering free rental gear and developing a culture that focused on small wins and encouragement, they lowered the barrier to entry and made learning how to longboard more accessible. As their sessions grew they started receiving DMs from riders all around the world: “What are you teaching?” “When are you coming to our city?” “How can we get involved?” With the overwhelming support and excitement around what they were doing, the only logical option was to purchase an old 2001 school bus, convert it into the “Shred Sled”, and embark on a 6-week tour around the USA to host events and create videos that empower people with confidence and community that go beyond the board. These events will include city skate scavenger hunts, longboard dancing lessons for riders of all levels, meet-ups with local skate shops, skate sessions of all disciplines, and (most importantly) women’s meet-ups. The special thing about what they are doing is that all the events are 100% FREE and open to the public. Their goal is to uplift new riders and welcome them into the community by cultivating a safe space to learn and express. Make sure you’re following @GoingBeyondTheBoard for updates, and send them a message if you’d like to get involved.
