Nubian Hueman hosts the Black August Homage Project which presents a series of events to educate and inspire in the spirit of Black August. SAFETY NOTICE: Effective Saturday, July 31, 2021, all people over the age of two must wear a mask indoors regardless of vaccination status at all times. Capacity is limited. August 7 at 1pm - Documentary: Day of the Gun & Discussion featuring Black August Planning Organization presented by jay sun. In August of 1971, California’s San Quentin Prison experienced the bloodiest moment in its history. By day’s end, six men—three guards, three prisoners—lost their lives. Nine years into his prison sentence, George Jackson wrote Soledad Brother: The Prison Writings of George Jackson, in which he explains his incarceration, the struggles of the Black Panther Party, anti-war sentiment growing about the Vietnam conflict, and other revolutionary impulses around the world. He quickly emerged as a foremost intellectual within the prison system. Ten years into this sentence of one year to life, Jackson raised arms against his captors. August 19 at 6pm - Movie: Black August* Inmate activist George Lester Jackson's short life became a flashpoint for revolution, igniting the bloodiest riot in San Quentin's history. Black August is a 2007 drama film directed by Samm Styles and starring Gary Dourdan, Darren Bridgett, Ezra Stanley, "Big" Leroy Mobley, and Don Williams. August 27 at 7pm to 10pm - Freedom Chants & Vibration featuring Slimkat Catch a night of live DJ vibes with the sounds celebrating the liberation of our music. From djembes to congos, Afrobeat to GoGo, grab the rhythm of these high vibrations and let's get free. Nubian Hueman will be open to service attendees with a special shopping discount. *All screenings will be in the Black Box Theater of the Anacostia Arts Center at 1231 Good Hope Rd SE, Washington DC 20020. Also the home of Nubian Hueman, MahoganyBooks, and The Fresh Food Factory.
