Come see how life was in Greenburgh during Colonial Times!
240 years ago, in the summer of 1781, the Continental Army under the command of George Washington and the French Army under the command of Le Comte de Rochambeau, marched into Greenburgh. There were 9,000 soldiers with their horses and oxen and they camped right here in Hartsdale for six weeks. General Rochambeau stayed at the Odell House at 425 Ridge Road, and General Washington stayed nearby in Ardsley. It was here that they made the crucial decision to attack the British Army in Yorktown, Virginia, not Manhattan. That decision resulted in victory and we won the Revolutionary War!
Please join us for a look at our past and perhaps have a chat with George Washington, Le Comte de Rochambeau, and Ben Franklin. You’ll also see:
• Illustrations of Odell House and the role it played in the Encampment and its Restoration Progress.
• Marching and military drills by re-enactors of the 5th New York Regiment and the 1st Rhode Island Regiment.
• Demonstrations of Colonial cooking and Colonial dress in 1781, wool spinning, blacksmithing, children’s toys and more!
This event is brought to you by Friends of Odell House Rochambeau Headquarters with the support of the Town of Greenburgh and the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area. It is part of the Hudson River Valley Ramble, an event series that celebrates the history, culture and natural resources of the Hudson River Valley.
