Description
The Waltham Public Library is seeking a friendly, vibrant, innovative. adaptive, enthusiastic, organized, service-oriented individual to help serve a diverse, urban community within a busy library setting. We're looking for someone who is self-motivated, cares about accuracy, and can handle stressful situations with grace and good humor. Customer service experience is highly valued. Duties include: Overseeing all aspects of the Children’s Department, including but not limited to the following: scheduling, assigning, training, supervising, and evaluating staff and volunteers; collaborating with other library departments and working with Administration and other Department Heads to plan and coordinate overall library services; responsible for analytic collection development, acquisition, and planning; producing statistical and budget reports; providing readers’ advisory support; leading the Children’s programming and community outreach efforts, including participating in offsite events; developing policies and procedures for Children’s services in accordance with Minuteman Library Network policy and interpreting and enforcing library policies; serving children and families by locating materials and information via all print and electronic resources, in person and on the telephone; providing public service and other Children’s desk duties as assigned; assisting patrons in troubleshooting personal computers, library OPACs, and various other types of electronic equipment; responding to patrons’ questions and concerns; participating in Minuteman group(s) and other professional development workshops. Performing other duties at the discretion of supervisors. 35 hours per week including a minimum of one evening per week and a minimum of one Saturday and one Sunday per month, year-round. Starting salary: $74,770 Excellent health & retirement benefits. Qualifications include: Master’s Degree in Library Science; five years of public library experience, with at least one year in a supervisory role, preferably in a Children’s Department; superior knowledge of the principles and practices of library work; ability to supervise employees efficiently; strong interest and comfort in working with children and families; comfort and confidence in all matters of technology, including experience with social media; superior customer service skills; demonstrated commitment to public service and staff development; excellent management and organizational abilities as well as attention to detail; ability to work with library staff and a diverse general public in a constructive and welcoming manner; ability to perform under pressure and resolve problems, including handling emergencies; excellent communication and instructional abilities; extreme creativity. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Must pass a pre-employment physical with drug and alcohol screening, a Criminal Offenders Record Information (CORI) and a background check.
