ORANGETOWN, NY — Rockland County's Homes For Heroes is expanding its apartment complex for homeless veterans. In 2013, a newly-formed nonprofit built eight affordable, rent-subsidized supportive apartments on the grounds of the former Camp Shanks in Tappan, from which more than 1.3 million GIs left to fight in Europe during World War II. These apartments for veterans in Tappan were built by Rockland Home for Heroes, and more are in the works. For founder John Murphy, a former Marine, the project is a living memorial for both those who left to serve overseas and those who, having served, need a home. "Every veteran has their own permanent home with all the privacy they need and want. It's a smashing success in turning lives around," wrote Murphy, a former Rockland County legislator. Veterans make up about 6 percent of the population of the United States but 8 percent of the country's homeless population, the Military Times reported in March. Homelessness among veterans grew during the coronavirus pandemic. So in Rockland, Phase II is underway to address that urgent need — to add 14 more units, some of which will be two-bedroom apartments for parents and people who need live-in home care services. (courtesy John Murphy) The apartments are intended for honorably discharged homeless veterans referred by the Veterans Administration, the Rockland County Veterans Department and the Rockland County Social Services Department. Much of the funding is coming from the New York State Office of Temporary & Disability Assistance. In addition, Murphy said, the nonprofit secured the balance through a loan and contributions from residents of Rockland. "I hope everyone visits the Donor Wall on our website to see all our donors and maybe add their name," he said. "We, of course, are still seeking financial help as the bills keep coming very fast and furious." For more information please visit the Rockland Homes for Heroes website.
