Description
BELLPORT, NY — Deputies from the Suffolk County Sheriff's office will be on hand at South Country Ambulance in Bellport Saturday for a Bike Rodeo and Safety Clinic aimed at teaching children safety precautions for riding bicycles.
The lessons will teach children, aged nine to 10 years old, where to ride on the road, how to use hand signals, and will show them how to safely cross an intersection and also how to properly wear a bicycle helmet. All of the demonstrations will be conducted by the deputy sheriffs.
The event will run from 10 a.m. to noon.
It is being run in conjunction with Sheriff Errol Toulon's office and that State Sen. Alexis Weik.
She described bike riding as a fun outside activity that people of all ages can enjoy, but noted "numerous bicycle accidents occur each year, sending many to hospitals and doctors with injuries."
"As young children begin to enjoy the pleasures of riding their bikes, it is important that we teach children how to ride safe and have fun at the same time," she said, adding. "I am excited to partner with the Suffolk County Sheriff's office in bringing an educational clinic where these necessary bike safety measures can be taught and accidents can be avoided."
South Country Ambulance is located at 420 Station Rd., Bellport. No registration is required. Participants will need to bring their bike and helmet on the day of the event.
