NEW HAVEN, CT — Two firefighters were injured and taken to the hospital after fighting a two-alarm house fire on Sheffield Avenue in Newhallville, and 17 people are without their homes. The fire, first reported just after noon, was in a two and a half story wood frame residence. 2nd Alarm on arrival 27 Sheffield Ave 2 1/2 wood fully involved— New Haven Fire (@NewHavenFire) August 17, 2021 Just before 1 p.m., fire command reported that the blaze was now up in the eves of the house, called a third floor, where firefighters were concentrated, with fire "coming out from the roof" from the rear of the house. At 1:05 p.m., the fire service switched from offensive to defensive mode with all firefighters told to evacuate the building, meaning that it's not longer safe to fight the fire from inside the building. "A defensive operation should be initiated when fire conditions prevent an interior attack such as when the structure is unsafe for firefighters to enter," according to a report. Two firefighters were reported to have been transported to the hospital, their conditions unknown. Flames continued to rise from the roof of the building as of 1:15 p.m. But by 2 p.m., the fire was under control. Fire, police, EMS…all on scene.
