Job Summary: The University of Colorado Boulder Athletics department encourages applications for a Building Mechanic! The purpose of this role is to support the University of Colorado Intercollegiate Athletic Department (staff, student-athletes and the overall University community and the general public) by repairing and installing equipment, providing equipment maintenance, preventive maintenance and maintaining equipment and supplies inventory. This position will work under, alongside, and in the absence of the Structural Trades II to support all athletic facilities. This position is responsible for promoting the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletics program.. This shall include adhering to the principles of the Athletic Department’s Mission Statement, Diversity and Inclusion Mission Statement, Core Values, Policies and Procedures, as well as the rules and regulations of the University, the Pac 12 Conference and the NCAA. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be: Door Wall Repair: Repair doors and walls within the Athletic Department. This work requires skills in carpentry, plastering, and painting. The work starts with assessing the damage and discussing findings with supervisor to determine the best course of action to return the damaged components to their original condition and complete the repair. Maintain Various Equipment and Machinery: Maintain equipment by implementing the accurate preventive schedule for equipment and machinery as crafted by the supervisor. This includes, but is not limited to, hand power tools, hand tools, and golf carts. Determining when an item should be replaced, in order to improve dependability and consistent operations. Guidance is given by the supervisor, as well as using knowledge gained by experience. Maintenance procedures include greasing fittings, replacing worn or broken parts, checking/maintaining proper fluid levels, and rebuilding equipment when necessary. Recommendations on whether to repair or replace a piece of equipment can have significant budgetary impacts and would also include the prioritization of replacement of older equipment. Repairs to Building Systems: This position will need to prioritize the renovation projects and recommend a course of action to supervisors regarding major projects and renovations keeping in mind recommendations that include repairs or replacements could have significant budgetary impacts. After receiving a work request, this position will assist in diagnosing and determining the problem, accurate course of action and then schedule the repair with guidance from the supervisor. An example of this would be repairing a leaking pipe. A request is submitted and assigned to the Building Mechanic who determine the source, seek custodial support, and make the repair, possibly rebuilding the system to avert future problems. The ability to complete this task would require knowledge of plumbing methods requesting additional assistance, if needed. At times, this position may need to drive a University vehicle. Renovating Building Systems: This position is also responsible for renovating building components and systems, as well as reconstruct furniture systems which requires knowledge in carpentry. When receiving the work request from the supervisor, this Building Mechanic will partner with supervisor on the design and determine the method to accomplish the alteration to the cabinet, for example. Additional steps needed to accomplish this includes, cut to the accurate size and shape, repair the plastic laminate top, prepare the surface, and finish the surface to match the existing piece. The Building Mechanic will help make decision related to determining the viability of the project and best methods based on carpentry techniques, matching finishes to existing finishes, and completing the alteration on schedule. This project would require carpentry, painting, and plastering skills, matching the building components to the existing construction, i.e. framing the walls, using wood or metal studs, hanging gypsum board on the studs, installing a door frame and hanging the door, installing a lockset as the application dictates, and taping, finishing, and painting the walls and door. Special Events: Assist in coordination of special events by assessing the needs of a user and setting up, as well as operating, the event accordingly, with instructions and guidance from the supervisor. In performing this task, this position draws on their experience, as well as the experience of others, to formulate an effective solution to the problem of creating functional and efficient gate entry system. Problems which could be encountered include availability of the necessary components, which could lead to unplanned design changes. An example would include the construction of a temporary entry gating system which allows for the queuing of patrons and ticket taking for a football game, but the needs of special events vary greatly in the scope and often require last minute alterations to allow an event to work. Communicate/Oversee Outside Contractors: Responsible for partnering with contractors, in the absence of the supervisor, to assess the condition of a building component, such as a room partition wall, and choose to make a repair, or replace portions of the wall. Communicate and oversee work performed by outside contractors and University personnel in performance of duties, insuring quality workmanship and completion on schedule with instruction/guidance from supervisor. A broad-based knowledge of construction techniques and methods is required to effectively accomplish this task. What We Can Offer: The salary range is $40,000- $47,000 annually. What We Require: This role requires one of the following: 1 year of progressively responsible experience in the structural trades (building maintenance trades including carpentry, electrical or painting maintenance, or locksmithing). Successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program or higher level course work from an accredited, non-correspondence, vocational or trades school appropriate to the work assignment may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
