It is based, in part, on hearsay and is intended for early information use rather than being a formal investigative report. On August 15, 2021, at 7:40 p.m., Sheriff's deputies responded to the 1100 block of Via Vera Cruz in San Marcos for a report of a person who was an apparent victim of an assault and was bleeding. Unfortunately, the adult male was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving at the hospital. The Sheriff's Homicide Unit responded and has assumed responsibility for the investigation. The Medical Examiner's Office will be conducting the autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death and the victim's family will be notified. Sheriff's Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation and updates will be provided as information becomes available.
