HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken's hospital has had two occasions in the last two years in which they had no COVID patients: In late July 2020 after months of lockdowns and severe precautions, and then again this past May 2021 after months of vaccinations, prompting the mayor to write on June 22, "Hoboken has not had any residents hospitalized for 30 straight days." But with the Delta variant of the virus spreading swiftly, unvaccinated residents are landing back in the local hospital. Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla released new statistics Monday night saying: Eight individuals are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 at Hoboken University Medical Center (This was up from seven a week ago)Of those, three are Hoboken residentsThey are all unvaccinated. He also said that out of all 288 COVID cases in Hoboken from June 1 through Aug. 16, 161 have been fully vaccinated people, 119 were unvaccinated, and 8 were partially vaccinated. None of the unvaccinated have been hospitalized or severely ill, he said. Vaccinated people may still get sick and spread the virus, but there is a lower chance of hospitalization or death, medical professionals say. The COVID vaccine is 95 percent effective against catching the virus. On Monday, the county of Hudson said it was offering third (booster) shots to immunocompromised residents who got the Pfizer or Moderna shot.
