WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Some Western Springs residents are complaining about the noise from BNSF Railway's pedestrian underpass project on the west side of town. In a statement Tuesday, Village President Alice Gallagher said the village could do nothing about it. "Unfortunately, the Village has no control over BNSF and their construction schedule because they are operating in their own right-of-way, the work is scheduled according to their union rules, and primary consideration is given to creating the least amount of disruption to train traffic," Gallagher said. She said BNSF has stated that its work will continue to start about 9 a.m. and finish 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. daily to avoid train rush hours in the early morning and late afternoon. Work is also slated for 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends. No night work is expected. According to the village, the underpass is replacing the one at Central Avenue. It is expected to improve safety for Metra commuters and residents who use Spring Rock Park, Village Club Pool, Theatre of Western Springs and Western Springs Recreation Center. Western Springs officials have expressed frustration before over BNSF's activities.
